Preparing for school stress

A friend of mine told me about the orientation she went to for her daughter's high school. She said that the best and worst moment was when the school's principal addressed the parents to say they should stop making their child lunch. The principal said that it was the child's job to make themselves lunch every day and that was one of the many painful steps parents were going to have to go through.

My friend was heartbroken as she said she would miss making her daughter lunch every day, but she understood the advice: High school is when we watch our child transition into a young adult. And as most of us remember from our own high school days, that is a stressful time to go through.

It's back-to-school time here in Charlotte, and there are lots of list articles coming out with how to help your child go back to school. I think the ones on the transition to high school are probably the most helpful, as the high school years can be the toughest (on parents and children).

But, I also think that we need to look back on our own student lives. What made you nervous about each grade that you entered? What was the best and worst part of that school year? What do you wish you could have gone back and done differently? We may not remember a lot of stories from when we were in school, but we probably remember enough to share at the dinner table and spark a conversation with our children. Our experiences will not be exactly the same as theirs, but it may help to remind them that we've been through what they are going through now.

What's your best back-to-school advice? Tell me in the comments.
